Would it surprise you to know that San Ramon commands higher median rent than San Francisco?
Well, perhaps it's true: The Bloomberg View, citing 2016 census data, found that Contra Costa's San Ramon fetched a higher gross rent than San Francisco did.
Bloomberg author Justin Fox noted that based on these data, which are the most recent the government provides, the median rent in San Francisco was $1,632 month in 2016, while in San Ramon, it was $1,987 per month.
First off, why so low?
Locals will note those figures seem more aligned with 1996 than 2016. But as Curbed SF points out, census data includes "rent-controlled units and older leases that never show up on sites like Zumper or Craigslist—at least, not at the prices that renters are presently paying."
